So i went to Device manager , right click on my DVD drive and disabled it. What finally worked for me was to delete the guest XP install (it was fresh) and reinstall it. However when attempting to deploy VMware Tools from the ISO image in optical drive (including other executables as well) I receive all sorts of errors mainly pointing to a permissions issue. The external hdd has a strange habit of disconnecting (not a USB cable thing) and maybe that interrupted the original install. PRTG is easy to set up & use. Enabled the chkdsk and restarted the Machine. Disable the CD-DVD driver via the Device Manager.
