So finally I put together the concept of unexplaiened behavior with Cisco VPN and file permissions. This error 51 message has been tormenting me for over a year. I'm not happy that whenever I VPN I have to reboot into 32 bit mode, but luckily I don't need to do that often from the MacPro.
